So I didn’t win the Outstanding New Organizer award at last night’s NAPO-Oregon chapter awards banquet. But you know what? That’s okay, because I still had a fabulous time, and it was a joy to see all the guests enjoy the banquet that my colleagues and I worked so hard to plan. And I got to wear my little red dress, which is always a cause for celebration.
My real reward has been in developing reSPACEd and seeing it really take off this past year. I knew I loved transforming spaces and the satisfaction of seeing an area change dramatically from messy to neat, but I never knew I would like working with my fantastic clients more than all of that.
There’s a big “before and after” that happens with the clients that is every bit as satisfying to see as the “before and after” of their space. When I first meet them, they tend to feel overwhelmed, discouraged, frustrated — even ashamed sometimes about the state of their house. But after a few organizing sessions, I see the metaphorical load start to lift from their shoulders. They start to smile, to laugh, to visibly relax more. And I leave the sessions with a big smile on my face, glad to know that I’m contributing to that newfound happiness.
I have an awesome job. I get to have fun (no, really — organizing is fun for me!), help people and make a little money all at the same time — what bigger reward is there than that?
