If I had to synthesize the steps to a clutter-free lifestyle in as few words as possible, it would all boil down to these four tips. Incorporate these tips into your life, and you will be in control of the clutter once and for all.
1. The root of clutter is too many objects and not enough space. You can solve this one of two ways: Make more space by buying more shelving or some sort of storage product or expanding your house. Or get rid of some objects. Most people find it easier to get rid of some objects.
2. Be very conscious of what objects you choose to bring into your space. Your space is limited, as is your time. Every new object will take from you some of your space and some of your time. (Time is needed to find a home for it, clean around it, maintain it, and put it back.) Ask yourself if the new object is worth the sacrifice.
3. If you decide the object is worth the sacrifice, ask yourself where you will put it and how often you will use it. Why do you have to have this object immediately at this point in your life?
4. Every object in your house needs a home, and every member of your family needs to know where that home is. When you are done with your object, it must return to its home. That is the only way to keep from losing the object.

Great tips MaryJo. I like how most of these involved the thinking part behind clutter control. Not just dealing with it once its here. 🙂
