Are you Team Open Storage or Team Closed Storage? Learn your style in order to get organized

March 12, 2018 by respaced

Over the years, I have found that when it comes to creating organizing systems that work for clients, clients fall into one of two camps: They are either Open Storage people or Closed Storage people.

Open Storage people like to see all of their stuff sitting out so they can find it instantly. Out-of-sight is out-of-mind for them. They tend to avoid putting stuff in drawers, boxes or filing cabinets. They prefer to see things lined up on shelves, sitting in tiny little bins on their desk, or grouped neatly together on the floor.

Closed Storage people prefer things stored the opposite way. They don’t like to look at all of their stuff because to them, it appears cluttery. So they like to put things inside drawers and cabinets. They like things in matching boxes with lids on them lined up on a shelf. They are good filers.

Neither way is better or more preferred than the other. They each have their advantages and disadvantages. For example, Closed Storage tends to look better. It’s the method you see used in magazines and in home makeover shows. This is because it looks so clean and orderly. But it is also the most expensive way of storing your items — boxes with lids and cabinetry with doors costs big bucks.

Open Storage can be much more cost-effective. But it can quickly look messy if the homeowner is not on top of keeping those open shelves tidy.

Here are some examples of Open Storage:

So if you find yourself unable to keep your home tidy and picked up, or if you find yourself arguing with your spouse about why he leaves all of his things around, take a moment to assess if perhaps you are a Closed Storage person living in a house set up for an Open Storage person or vice versa. It might help you make some meaningful changes that allow you to live a more organized lifestyle!
