3. If you have room to store your winter gear in your closet, don’t leave it jumbled up in a tub in the corner. Hang a hanging shoe organizer on the back of the closet door and put each hat, scarf or set of mittens or gloves in each pocket. Designate one row per family member and label that row, so everybody knows where to instantly find his or her stuff.
4. Alternatively, you could also hang a purse organizer or hat organizer on the back of the closet door. You could also hang a towel bar on the back of the door to organize scarves. These devices are inexpensive and help open up the shelf and floor space to store other things.
5. So what do you do with the winter gear if you don’t have room to hang the shoe organizer on the door? Get three baskets, label one “hats,” one “gloves and mittens” and one “scarves” (if there is no room for using a towel bar) and place those baskets on top of the closet shelf. Make sure those labels are big and visible!
6. Teach little kids to hang up their stuff by installing coat hooks at their eye level just inside the closet to hang their jackets and backpacks. There are so many cute coat hooks available. Why not let your child choose the hook? He or she will be more likely to use it that way.
7. On the floor of the closet, place a shoe rack for everyday shoes. Or leave that space open to store the kids’ musical instruments and sports equipment. Be sure to store only the sports equipment for the sport they are currently playing. Remember, space is at a premium, so you have to be choosy about what gets a precious spot.
8. The secret to maintaining your organized hall closet is to go through it several times a year to weed out the items that aren’t being used or worn. The smaller the space, the more selective you have to be about what gets stored.

Hi A,
Thanks for reading and commenting. When you say the kitchen closet, do you mean a pantry? I recently blogged about pantry organizing here: http://respacedpdx.blogspot.com/2011/07/12-tricks-for-organizing-your-pantry.html If that's not what you mean, shoot me an email at info@respacedpdx.com with info about what you store in your kitchen closet, and I will see what I can dig up for you.
