8 tips for organizing your front entryway when you don’t have a coat closet

August 17, 2023 by respaced

The front entryway is one of the toughest spaces in the house to keep tidy when you don’t have a coat closet to stash everything in! Here are some of our go-to solutions for our organizing clients:

Use these shoe cabinets (pictured here) to store shoes in. Their narrow profile means they look sleek without taking up a lot of space.

Accept that you and your family members will not have space to store every pair of shoes you own by the front door. Some shoes will have to live in their bedroom closets or elsewhere in the house. Decide how many pairs of shoes will fit in your shoe cabinet, and then make putting away the excess shoes part of everyone’s nightly or weekly tidy-up routine.

Heavy-duty hooks all perfectly lined up on the wall look neater than a clothes tree (and are more stable too!) Just like with the shoes, the family needs to accept that they won’t have the space to store dozens of coats, jackets and bags out here, so the off-season or less frequently worn items will need to live elsewhere.

If you install the coat hooks higher on the wall, that leaves space to install a row of hooks lower on the wall to hold backpacks and bags.

If you have dog-walking gear, one hook could be used to hold leashes and a small bag containing dog-walking items like bags, flashlights or head lamps.

A small wall-mounted shelf with drawers is the perfect place to stash keys, sunglasses and other grab-and-go items for heading out the door.

An attractive, sturdy tote bag hanging on one of the hooks makes for a convenient place to hold coat closet-type things that are too large for a wall-mounted shelf, such as gloves, winter hats and scarves.

Sometimes the easier solution is for the family to not enter through the front door at all, but instead enter through a side door or garage door, particularly if there is a hall closet near that door or space to create a mudroom.

Does your front entryway lack a coat closet? If so, what solutions have you found for keeping that space tidy (or at least tidier!)?
