There is one tip I find myself giving to my organizing clients over and over: If you want your house to feel organized more of the time, commit to doing a 15-minute tidy-up each evening in a different room of the house. Here’s how to make this work for you:
1. Pick the same time each evening to do your 15 minute tidy-up. Personally, I think the best time to do this is right after dinner, when no one is hungry. Then you can reward yourself with dessert or your favorite Netflix show afterward.
2. Turn your 15 minutes into a daily appointment on your phone’s calendar with an alarm, so you don’t forget about this new habit you’re trying to create.
3. During your 15 minutes, pick a different room of the house each night. Put things back into their homes, throw out trash, and remove anything that doesn’t belong in the room.
4. If you have a spouse or partner, you can take turns cleaning up the kitchen each night, so one person isn’t always stuck doing their 15 minutes in the kitchen. If you have kids, put them to work beside you. Kids can put books back on a shelf, take plates to the kitchen, and put clothing in a hamper. They can be surprisingly helpful, and then they learn how to tidy up at the same time! Win-win!
If you stick to your 15-minute tidy-up in a different room each night, you will be amazed at the results you start to see. It truly is the secret to living that less stress, more organized lifestyle that we all want.
