While the winter here in Portland has been pretty mild this year, I know other parts of the country have been experiencing some of the coldest temps on record. And even in Portland, we still have a wide variety of weather, which means we are all trying to figure out how to store all those winter hats, gloves and mittens! So here are my go-to methods for organizing winter gear in my clients’ homes:
My favorite way to store gloves, mittens, hats and scarves is in a back-of-the-door shoe organizer. These fabric organizers allow you to store all of the mittens in one row, all of the hats in another row, etc. Or if you have children at home, you can give each child his or her own row. And of course, the youngest child’s hat, gloves, mittens and scarf are all stored in the bottom row. Make sure when you buy these over-the-door hangers that your door will still close once the hanger is clipped on to the top of the door.
Another fun way to store hats, gloves and mittens is in a shoe rack with multiple cubby holes (like this one from Amazon). This storage piece can sit on the floor or on a shelf in the closet. Each set of mittens or gloves gets its own cubby. It’s easy to find what you need this way!
Along the same lines, you could also get a hanging shoe organizer (it features cubbies, but is suspended from your clothing rod in your hall closet) and give each hat, scarf and set of mittens its own home there. Or get the hanging sweater organizer and give each family member his or her own shelf cubby for their hat, gloves, mittens and scarf.
Boots should go on a boot tray by the door so they have a safe place to drip dry that won’t ruin your floors.
And a simple coat rack placed over a boot tray can accommodate extra coats that also need to drip-dry after a fun afternoon playing in the snow.

If space is really limited in your home, an ottoman with a lift-up lid and shoe cubbies inside can also organize your hats, mittens and scarves. When the lid is closed, it provides a place to sit and put all of your gear on!
