Shoe Bench, you and I are breaking up. I used to think you were the end-all, be-all solution for storing shoes in the hallway. A place to store shoes AND sit down and put on shoes! But year after year, house after house, I never saw you actually function that way. Instead, your bench became a clutter magnet, a holding spot for books that need to go back to the library, mail that was brought in from the mailbox but never went any further, and all those Amazon returns you keep telling yourself you will make.
I have never once seen anyone successfully use the bench for what it was intended for. So I’m not going to recommend you anymore.
Instead, I have started using shoe shelves and shoe cabinets. And I have been encouraging families to store only a couple pairs of shoes per family member by the front door, with the rest of their shoes living in their bedroom closets. These seem to be the solutions that work best to solve the shoe pile by the front door.
So good-bye, Shoe Bench. I’ve moved on.
